What is SSL?

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a protocol design by Netscape Communications to enable encrypted, authenticated communications across the Internet. SSL is used mostly (but not exclusively) in communication between web browsers and web servers. Url’s that begin with “https” indicate that an SSL connection will be used. SSL provides three important things: privacy, authentication, and message integrity. In an SSL connection, the session between the person browsing and the server (where your web page is) is secured so that the information you enter can not be intercepted by third parties.
